St. Croix is America's Best Kept Vacation Secret

St. Croix is located 40 miles south of St. Thomas and St. John, together the three of them constitute the U.S. Virgin Islands. St. Croix is the largest of the US Virgins and is the only one (except Water Island) that is completely surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. During it's history, St. Croix has flown the flag of seven different nations since Columbus arrived here in 1493, and produced more sugar cane than the other two US islands. It is considered one of the United States best kept vacation secrets.

Today, St. Croix retains remnants of all these various cultural influences and so retains its own unique character. Because it is the least well known as a tourist destination, St. Croix has more of a relaxed feel than its sister Virgin Islands. Relaxed certainly doesn't mean boring, though, as there are lots of things to do on St. Croix. If your idea of a great vacation destination is a laid-back, un-crowded island with great food, incredible white sand beaches, warm seas full of tropical fish, and lots of interesting things to do, then St. Croix is your dream come true.

There are over 20 beaches to explore and snorkel, including Buck Island National Monument with its famous Turtle Beach (voted one of the Caribbean's ten most beautiful beaches). St. Croix is a well known scuba diving area. In fact, it is rated as one of the ten best scuba islands in the Caribbean. If golf is your game, avail yourself of one of St. Croix's three golf courses, two 18 hole and one 9 hole.

The smorgasbord of tours and points of interest include the rum distillery tour, historic sugar plantation museums and forts, various water sports, sport fishing and horseback riding through the rainforest. And we haven't even mentioned the world-class shopping or restaurants yet. As for nightlife, a quieter and more casual atmosphere prevails on St. Croix, but hot spots for evening entertainment can be found in the towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted.
